Has Anybody Used Brasso To Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

Using Brasso to smooth cases and plexiglass

  1. Hi all,

I've read something about people using Brasso to clean cases and polish plexiglass, merely a couple of questions came to my heed and I was wondering if you could aid.

    1. Can I use Brasso on both the case and the plexiglass without opening the case to remove the movement?
two. Has anyone used Brasso on gilded-capped/filled watches?
    3. Any major warnings?

    Thanks for your help!

    Cheers,

    Paulo

    Hi Paulo,

I use Brasso Wadding on crystals with great results, always conscientious to keep it away from any gilded simply that is simply my business that information technology volition remove besides as polish. On the gold I utilize a gold polishing cloth which is extremely gentle.

The one time I tried it on an ss case, it left noticable swirl marks. Since then I've been using cape cod polishing clothes for stainless cases and jeweler rogue fabric for gilt/gold filled cases.
  5. Thank you for your thoughts! I've been using a Tiffany'southward polishing cloth for both gold-capped and SS, but some of my crystals are scratched and I concluded upwards thinking of Brasso. How do you use it? I know it might audio similar a impaired question but I've never used Brasso before. Just become some on a textile and smoothen the crystal?
  6. I've used machine pigment scratch remover paste on both the stainless steel case and the hesalite crystal with good results, cheaper and easier to become than polywatch :D

I had a very badly scratch hesalite crystal on a project sentry, i starting time used 2500 emery paper and then the scratch remover paste, crystal came upwardly like new

I wouldn't let that stuff nigh my watch, if it gets downwards the stem into the case information technology'll not react well with the oils in the movement, it'll too greatly shorten the life of plated or gold filled watches equally information technology is rather abrasive. I bought a Waltham that was lovingly cleaned regularly with the stuff and we found residue throughout the movement when we opened it up..... and no lube left.

Brasso wadding ? Seriously doubt conscientious use would e'er produce the problems yous mention. Liquid used carelessly equally with most cleaners I would concord could cause problems.

I'll use Brasso but on crystals as a showtime polisher, then follow upwardly with Polywatch later on the heavy scratches are smoothed.

I don't retrieve information technology will hurt solid aureate if not aggressively rubbed, merely I wouldn't risk it. Keep Brasso abroad from any rolled gold, gold plate, gold filled or capping. You're likely to go right down to the base metal if y'all are not very careful.

My understanding is that they changed the formula a few years ago. New stuff is not almost equally effective equally the old, I'thousand told.

    Stick with Polywatch.

I've had practiced results from using Brasso. The important affair is to ensure that but plenty is used to dampen the material, that way none gets on the instance or into it.

I discover that Polywatch is more of a smoother, not a cut compound, then it's OK for a final sheen, but proper employ of Brasso usually doesn't crave it.

    See hither for my process

As for polishing cases, gold or plated cases but get a wipe with Cape Cod or similar.

Stainless cases can exist polished with leather pads or blocks and diverse grades of rouge, brushed surfaces tin can be washed with 600 moisture and dry on a soft backing and the particular held in a soft wooden jig. That way all marks are in i direction. I haven't tried starburst finish on stainless yet but have a design for a jig to do that, will post results (if information technology works ;))

With any case finishing, I remove the crystal and movement to exercise it, and ultrasonic clean after and prior to re-assembly.
