How To Secure A Door With Windows
My forepart door has a deadbolt, but right side by side to the knob/deadbolt is a tall narrow window, so that you tin can see whoever is outside. This is a security take chances as anyone could smash that window and open the lock from the exterior.
Is there a way to secure a door like this, without removing the window? The 1 thought I know if is a deadbolt where you demand a key to open it even from the inside, but I don't think our code allows this for the front door.

There is a product called Window Security Moving-picture show which is a sparse (a couple mm) film that adheres to the window and makes information technology exceptionally hard for someone to interruption. Many lock smiths/security companies can install information technology. Here's a video of it in activity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYdVK3BqPfk
This is a indistinguishable of my reply from this question.

Here information technology is continuing up to a baseball bat: youtube.com/sentry?five=QidBcvmzEPA. That being said, everything is breakable, it's just a matter of time and deterring burglars. Nigh burglars would opt to not stand in that location and take their chances for 5min, they will but move to the adjacent firm that doesn't have any protection.

Option A: Alarm organization.
Selection B: Deadbolt with a captive key feature. The interior knob tin be removed turning it into a double cylinder lock. Check with your local codes to encounter if this is permitted.

It'south rarely permitted in residential settings, only that doesn't stop a lot of people from doing information technology. Burn code is intended to continue you safe from fire, non keep people out of your house.

+1 for the alarm arrangement, make sure the alarm company sign is visible. While I've seen option B more than in one case, i call up I would pass.

For some reason the previous owners of my house had installed a double cylinder lock on the door coming in from the garage, but non the front or back doors that take windows next to them within a few inches. I'thousand not sure what they were thinking.

I had this type of window when I bought my condo. Luckily it was just the right width to replace the single pane of glass with glass bricks. Improve security and ameliorate insulation.

If in that location is simply a window on 1 side, y'all could get a new door that has the hinge on the other side (or maybe flip your existing door).

The best type of lock for that state of affairs would be to become a double sided deadbolt. And then if someone where to suspension the window they would be able to unlock the door, they would still need a central from the within.

Yous tin can put a grate on the window nearest the interior bolt; there's a product called Mr. Goodbar that is made of 3/16 steel rods, spaced about ane/2" apart from the pictures. I'1000 ordering one now (will accept to cutting information technology down to fit).

How accept you secured the rest of the windows in the firm? They can just as easily exist cleaved, and become doors themselves.

@Tester101 I concur that I need to wait at all the windows, and the patio door. Fortunately some are difficult to get to due to fencing and bushes. Just thought the door window was a good topic to ask about.

Bars or a heavy duty screen could be an selection. Even a motion detector with a flood lite outside would be a good deterrent. Deterrents brand the infiltrator move on. If they really desire to go far, they will get in, but like electricity they like to cull the path of least resistence.

Get a deadbolt without an within latch. Hang the key on a wall away from the window or out of sight completely. It may be a pain to have to become the key every fourth dimension you want to unlock the door, just it works.
